The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) National Coordinator, Norman Chipakupaku, has attributed the recent flooding, particularly in Lusaka, to irresponsible disposal of plastic waste and illegal structures blocking drainage systems.
Mr. Chipakupaku told Mafken News that the obstruction of drainage systems and natural water channels has significantly contributed to flooding in affected areas.
He said the DMMU, with support from the Zambia National Service, has been actively working to address flood-prone and waterlogged areas across the city.
Mr. Chipakupaku has since called on members of the public to stop dumping waste in drainage systems and to avoid constructing structures along roads and waterways.
