PARTILLY COLLAPSED TAILINGS IN LUANGWA RAISES ENVIRONMENTAL ALARM

Kitwe District Commissioner Oncemore Ngonomo

A disused tailings storage facility, TD 33C, has partially collapsed, leading to leakage into the Luangwa River.

Confirming the incident to Mafken News, Kitwe District Commissioner Oncemore Ngonomo said authorities are investigating the incident to determine its cause and are taking steps to prevent future failures.

Mr. Ngonomo noted that the facility is old and inactive, with unclear ownership, potentially resulting from privatization sales.

While residents are not in immediate danger, Mr. Ngonomo highlighted concerns over possible water contamination.

As an emergency measure, an embankment has been constructed to contain the leakage. Authorities plan a long-term solution involving the re-engineering of the facility to ensure permanent safety.
