Traders Challenge Kitwe City Council Over Delayed Chamboli Market Project

By Respite Kaoma,

Traders at Chamboli Market in Wusakile Constituency have expressed concern over delays in completing the Chamboli Modern Market Shelter, questioning both the pace and quality of the project.

The development comes after the Parliamentary Committee on Local Government Accounts last year criticized Kitwe City Council (KCC) over the implementation of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects.

During on-the-spot checks conducted across all five constituencies in Kitwe District, the committee identified serious lapses in project execution and quality control. Among the highlighted projects was the Chamboli Modern Market Shelter, whose construction began in 2023 but remains incomplete, with visible defects ranging from the roofing to the flooring.

Speaking to Mafken News, traders said the incomplete infrastructure has forced them to continue trading on the floor, as vendor stalls have not yet been constructed.

They have further raised concerns about the quality of works, stating that the structure does not meet expected standards.

Meanwhile, Kitwe City Council Public Relations Manager Mwaka Nakweti has confirmed that the local authority is engaging the contractor over the delays and poor performance.

Ms. Nakweti said the engagement is a necessary step before the council can proceed with terminating the contract if the issues are not resolved.

The project site was officially handed over on February 26, 2026, under a contract valued at over K280,000.
