UNZA Lecturer Urges Balance Between Tradition and Modern Trends

By Jotham Kayombo Likomeno,

Professor Cheela Chilala

A senior lecturer at the University of Zambia, Professor Cheela Chilala, has called for greater flexibility in preserving cultural identity by blending traditional heritage with emerging trends.

Speaking to Mafken News, Professor Chilala said globalization and social media have exposed younger generations to diverse cultures, compelling countries like Zambia to strike a balance between preserving traditions and adapting them to remain relevant.

He emphasized that Generation Z represents a distinct culture, and urged parents and traditional leaders to ensure cultural values are passed on in ways that resonate with modern society.

Professor Chilala added that culture, including traditional ceremonies, should evolve naturally with changing times while maintaining its core essence.

He warned that excessive rigidity risks alienating young people and reducing their interest in cultural practices.
