UPND to Prioritise Popularity, Resources in 2026 Copperbelt Candidate Selection

Copperbelt UPND Chairperson, Elisha Matambo

Copperbelt UPND Chairperson, Elisha Matambo, says the ruling party will prioritize popularity, resource mobilization and community engagement in selecting candidates ahead of the August 13, 2026 general elections.

Mr. Matambo said the party is currently finalizing its adoption process for parliamentary, mayoral and council candidates, adding that consultations are being held with citizens, churches and other stakeholders.

He maintained that the party will not impose candidates on communities, but will instead adopt individuals who reflect local preferences and have the capacity to run effective campaigns.

Mr. Matambo also disclosed that interviews have already been conducted in areas without sitting councillors, Members of Parliament or Mayors from the party, in preparation for the expected announcement of new constituencies on April 15.

He further said the party’s internal elections, recently concluded across two hundred and fifty-three wards and thirty constituencies, have strengthened structures on the Copperbelt despite earlier concerns from critics about possible divisions.

Mr. Matambo added that the province is entering the 2026 election cycle with a unified front, positioning the party for a competitive race.
