Fatal Accident at Mopani Copper Mines Claims Life of Contract Worker

A tragic underground accident at Mopani Copper Mines Mufulira plant has claimed the life of a 28-year-old miner.

The incident occurred on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 1507-meter level shaft.

In a statement made available to Mafken News, Copperbelt Police Commissioner Mwala Yuyi identified the victim as Christopher Katongo of Kamuchanga Township an employee of Reliant Mining Company, a firm contracted by Mopani Copper Mines.

According to the Police, the accident took place around 16:30 hours while a crew of four was operating a Boomer machine underground. During the operation, Katongo reportedly fell from the equipment and was subsequently run over by the machine.

Police further revealed that the victim sustained severe traumatic injuries, including a broken pelvis and internal injuries. Although the mine’s safety department responded immediately and evacuated Katongo to Malcolm Watson Mine Hospital, he was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police have confirmed that investigations have been instituted to determine if safety protocols were breached or if mechanical failure played a role in the tragedy.
