Environmentalists Bemoan Weak Enforcement as Plastic Pollution Worsens in Zambia

By Respite Kaoma,

Environmentalists have expressed concern over the growing plastic pollution crisis in Zambia, warning that weak enforcement of existing laws is undermining efforts to address the problem.

Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, Environmentalist Dr. Brian Chirambo said the continued widespread use of non-biodegradable plastics is causing serious damage to the environment, aquatic ecosystems, and human health.

Dr. Chirambo noted that the Zambia Environmental Management Act clearly provides for the control of plastic pollution, but stressed that the major challenge lies in poor implementation and enforcement of the law.

He observed that despite measures such as charging for plastic bags and ongoing public awareness campaigns, plastic pollution remains rampant, indicating the need for stronger action to hold both individuals and businesses accountable.

The environmentalist cited recent cases of indiscriminate plastic dumping and pollution as evidence that stricter enforcement of existing regulations is urgently needed.

Dr. Chirambo further emphasized the importance of changing public attitudes towards plastic use, calling for intensified education and awareness campaigns to promote responsible consumption and environmental protection.
