The Ministry of Agriculture has announced significant growth in Zambia’s seed industry, with maize seed production reaching 178,000 metric tonnes in 2025, up from 52,000 metric tonnes in 2024.
Ministry of Agriculture Principal Public Relations officer, Balewa Zyuulu, says the increase in exports demonstrates growing regional and international demand for Zambian seed and highlights the country’s expanding role as a supplier of high-quality agricultural inputs.
Speaking in Lusaka, Mr. Zyuulu disclosed that Zambia exported 88,380 metric tonnes of maize seed in 2025, with countries across Africa and Europe importing the seed.
He further stated that Local farmers consumed approximately 55,000 metric tonnes, ensuring sufficient supply for planting and replanting.
Mr. Zyuulu expressed optimism that production and exports will continue to grow, strengthening Zambia’s position as a regional hub for seed production, creating employment, and improving food security.
