KCM CEO Urges Increased CSR Participation at 2026 Marathon Launch

By Respite Kaoma,

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Mewett has called on more companies in Zambia’s extractive industry to actively participate in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Speaking during the launch of the 2026 KCM Marathon, scheduled for May 23 in Chingola, Mr. Mewett noted that only 10 out of 340 medium to large companies are currently engaged in CSR activities, a situation he described as inadequate.

He emphasized that CSR should be viewed as a “tax for the damages” caused by mining activities, acknowledging the environmental and social impact of the industry on surrounding communities.

Mr. Mewett also reiterated conditions set by Hakainde Hichilema for companies operating under KCM, highlighting the importance of quality, delivery, and competitive pricing, alongside promoting women’s employment and investing in community-focused CSR programmes.

KCM has contributed US$40,000 towards the marathon.

Meanwhile, Nchanga Golf Club President Mabvuto Ng’ona expressed gratitude to KCM and other sponsors for supporting the event.

Mimbula Minerals Limited Director Fidelis Chanda reaffirmed the company’s commitment to community wellness, youth empowerment, and sports development. He disclosed that the firm has contributed US$10,000 towards this year’s marathon, maintaining last year’s support, with over US$50,000 invested in athletics and community sports in 2025.

And Johnson Kangombe, Mayor of Chingola, praised the sponsors for supporting the initiative, noting its positive impact on community health, youth engagement, and social cohesion.

The second edition of the marathon is set for Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Nchanga Golf Club, with over 2,000 participants expected, including athletes, employees, and community members.
