North-Western Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Luckson Mulumbi has confirmed that 213 police officers remain stranded in Kikonge, Mufumbwe District, following the handover of the mine to commandos.
Mr. Mulumbi explained that the situation has been caused by flooding of the Musondweji River, which has made it difficult for officers to cross to the other side due to heavy rains currently being experienced in the area.
Speaking on the matter, the Deputy Permanent Secretary assured that government is making every possible effort to ensure the safety and eventual evacuation of the stranded officers, despite the challenging weather conditions.
He further revealed that most illegal miners who had settled in the area have since been cleared, emphasizing that government remains committed to ensuring that future mining operations at Kikonge will only be conducted by trained and licensed legal miners.
