Traders operating at Kitwe’s newly constructed Green Market have raised concern over the continued presence of street vendors in surrounding areas, despite efforts by authorities to relocate them from the Chisokone one-way area to the modern facility.
Speaking to Mafken News, one of the traders, Rose Mulamba, expressed frustration that ongoing street vending is threatening the survival of businesses at the new market, which she said are already struggling to attract customers following the relocation.
Ms. Mulamba, who trades in tomatoes and onions, said sales have dropped drastically, making it difficult for her to meet basic family needs.
She further warned that without urgent intervention from the Kitwe City Council, traders risk incurring heavy losses, as unsold perishable goods may go to waste amid declining business at the market.
