Socialist Party Copperbelt Provincial Secretary – Boyd Mwelwa

The Socialist Party on the Copperbelt has expressed concern over the delayed burial of former President Edgar Lungu, warning that the situation could have political implications ahead of the August 30, 2026 general elections.

Copperbelt Provincial Secretary Boyd Mwelwa says the continued delay in laying the former Head of State to rest is unjustified and may influence voter sentiment.

Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, Mr. Mwelwa emphasized the cultural and religious importance of burying the dead promptly in line with African traditions.

He has since appealed to Hakainde Hichilema to consider the pleas of the late president’s family and supporters to allow for the burial to proceed.

Mr. Mwelwa warned that the prolonged delay could be perceived as politically motivated and may ultimately work to the advantage of opposition political parties in the upcoming elections.

He added that the continued delay is causing prolonged pain to the family and supporters, noting that keeping the body unburied for an extended period is not culturally appropriate.
