Timber Sector Cries Out for Investment as Zambia Misses Out on Potential Growth

By Respite Kaoma,

The Zambia National Association for Saw Millers is calling on the government to prioritize the timber sector, citing its vast potential for growth, investment, and job creation.

Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, Association General Secretary Derrick Chilatu says the sector is being held back by a ban on hardwood exports and a shortage of raw materials for softwood production.

He stated that the sector could contribute up to 2% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but with the current situation, there hasn’t been any major contribution.

He emphasized that the timber sector is labor-intensive and could create a ton of jobs if supported.

Mr. Chilatu highlighted the sector’s sustainability, saying the timber sector is sustainable, unlike the mining sector.

He urged the government to prioritize investing in the timber sector over the mining sector, citing its renewable nature.
