Minister of Information and Media and Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has described the outcome of the just-ended Chawama Constituency by-election as a clear signal of the thriving democracy in Zambia.
Mr. Mweetwa stated that the results prove the country’s democratic space is neither shrinking nor threatened, contrary to the claims made by some individuals.
And on behalf of the government, Mr. Mweetwa thanked the people of Chawama for participating peacefully in the by-election, which saw a candidate from the opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) emerge victorious.
In a decisive outcome, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) declared Bright Nundwe of the FDD as the winner of the Chawama seat.
Mr. Nundwe, who enjoyed support from the Tonse Alliance and Patriotic Front (PF) factions, secured 8,085 votes, defeating his closest rival, Morgan Muunda of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), who garnered 6,542 votes.
Other participants included Davison Mulenga of Citizens First, who received 1,534 votes and George Mwenya, an independent candidate who polled 466 votes.
