The Emeralds and Semi-Precious Stones Association of Zambia (ESMAZ) has cautioned the government to investigate individuals condemning a statement by Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele, alleging that such critics may be backing illegal mining activities and foreign interests.
Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, ESMAZ President Victor Kalesha said government efforts to formalise artisanal and small-scale mining were a step in the right direction.
Mr Kalesha also commended the Zambia Army for ensuring that the Mufumbwe operation concluded without any casualties.
He noted that the government has offered mining licences to local people who form cooperatives and undergo training, citing safety concerns as the basis for the initiative. He urged eligible miners to take advantage of the programme and avoid engaging in illegal mining.
Meanwhile, Golden Party of Zambia (GPZ) President Jackson Silavwe has praised President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive to the Zambia Army to curb illegal gold mining, describing it as a commendable move aimed at safeguarding the country’s natural resources
