A women’s organization, Terra Group Cooperatives, is calling for collective action to address rising cases of Gender-Based Violence, particularly in mining communities such as Wusakile Township in Kitwe and Kankoyo Township in Mufulira District.
Speaking to Mafken News, Information and Publicity Secretary Thelmah Nkowani said the group will host a platform for open discussions on GBV ahead of International Women’s Day next month. She said men will be included in the conversations, as their involvement is key to tackling the vice.
Ms. Nkowani cited poverty as a major driver of abuse and exploitation, noting that many women suffer in silence due to stigma and fear. According to the Zambia Police Service, 41,026 GBV cases were recorded in 2025, representing a 2.7 percent decrease from 2024.
Ms. Nkowani has since called for stronger collaboration with stakeholders, including the Human Rights Commission, and increased grassroots sensitization.
