Geotechnical Engineering Under Scrutiny After Chingola–Chilabombwe Bridge Collapse

The recent collapse of the bridge linking Chingola and Chilabombwe has sparked concern over geotechnical engineering standards in Zambia.
Speaking to Mafken News, Rock Mechanics Specialist Daniel Mabeti stressed the need for strict and professional geotechnical practices to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Dr. Mabeti said engineers must prioritise accurate geological and geotechnical data collection, comprehensive site investigations, and thorough testing before project implementation.
He added that careful design execution, continuous monitoring, and routine maintenance are critical to ensuring infrastructure safety and durability.
Dr. Mabeti also emphasized the importance of clear communication among engineers, contractors, and relevant authorities throughout the project lifecycle.
The expert has urged stakeholders to treat the bridge collapse as a learning opportunity and strengthen adherence to best practices in geotechnical engineering to safeguard public infrastructure.
