Kagem Mining Honoured for Four Years Without a Lost-Time Injury

By Kalonje Mumba,

The Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has called on mining companies across the country to intensify safety training programmes and strengthen worker participation in safety decision-making processes.

MUZ General Secretary George Mumba made the call in Kitwe during the presentation of a safety award to Kagem Mining Limited, which marked four years without a lost-time injury.

Mr. Mumba expressed concern over the continued loss of lives in the mining sector, noting that within the first two months of 2026, Zambia has already recorded five mining fatalities at Mopani South Ore Body, Mopani Mufulira Mine, and Lubambe Copper Mine.

He emphasized the need for adequate staffing levels to prevent fatigue-related incidents, the adoption of modern monitoring technologies, and the protection of workers’ dignity and rights.

Meanwhile, Dr Sixtus Mulenga, Chairperson of the Kagem Mining Board, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to miner safety and encouraged other mining firms to emulate Kagem’s safety standards.
