Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana says Zambia’s nuclear programme is a critical component of the country’s energy diversification efforts and broader socio-economic transformation agenda.
Mr. Kawana made the remarks during a high-level meeting with staff from the Radiation Protection Authority (RPA) held at his office in Lusaka. He emphasized that public awareness and transparency are essential in building trust and confidence in the country’s nuclear programme.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment to advancing the national nuclear agenda and called on the Radiation Protection Authority to play its key role in regulating nuclear activities and safeguarding the public and the environment from radiation hazards.
Meanwhile, Radiation Protection Authority Executive Director Boster Siwila said the Authority is engaging with senior government officials to enhance understanding of its regulatory mandate and strengthen public safety measures.
The meeting also underscored the importance of developing strong national infrastructure for nuclear power, in line with guidelines set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
