More than 500 traders in Chingola have been ordered to relocate from the illegal Chinyante-Nyante trading site to designated markets.
Chingola Mayor Johnson Kang’ombe said the land currently occupied by the traders belongs to Zambia Railways, which is preparing to repossess the property.
Mr. Kang’ombe, however, assured the vendors that government has expanded and upgraded nearby markets with enough space to accommodate all affected traders.
Meanwhile, the traders have expressed concern over the move, questioning whether the designated markets can fully accommodate them.
They have also raised fears that relocating from a long-established trading area could negatively affect their livelihoods.
