Two small-scale miners have died in Luanshya District after a pit collapsed at Mulyashi Mine.
According to a statement issued by Copperbelt Commissioner Mwala Yuyi, the incident occurred between 17:00 and 19:00 hours on April 16, 2026.
Preliminary reports indicate that the victims were part of a group of miners extracting copper ore when the pit’s structure gave way, burying five people under a heap of waste material and ore.
Three of the miners managed to escape, while two were trapped and later died.
Police have identified the deceased as 23-year-old Patson Mwansa Junior and 24-year-old Kelvin Sichinga.
The survivors, Marlon Mwaba aged 37 and Kaselebela Lubwesa aged 26, were rescued by fellow miners and are currently receiving treatment at Roan General Hospital.
Police have since visited the scene and launched investigations into the incident.
