The Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) has criticized the Zambia Police Service over the killing of five people in Lusaka’s Chibolya Compound, describing the incident as a case of extrajudicial execution.
In a statement issued to Mafken News, PeP President Sean Tembo said the actions by police point to a troubling disregard for human life and due process.
The five deceased are alleged to have earlier assaulted a police officer, Inspector Mweenda.
However, Mr. Tembo, referencing remarks by Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, noted that the police account suggests the suspects were not armed, raising questions about the use of lethal force.
He stated that the individuals, described as petty offenders, could have been arrested and brought before the courts rather than being killed.
Mr. Tembo has since called on President Hakainde Hichilema and the government to ensure adherence to the rule of law and the protection of citizens’ rights.
Police have not yet provided a comprehensive update on the incident beyond their initial statement.
