The Non-governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has expressed concern over what it describes as increasing misogynistic rhetoric targeting women in leadership.
The organisation says recent remarks by Simon Mwewa Lane have questioned the competence of female leaders using gender stereotypes.
NGOCC Executive Director Anne Mbewe-Anamela said attacks on women based on appearance, temperament, or marital status undermine Zambia’s democratic values of equality and respect.
She noted that such narratives discourage women from participating in leadership and governance.
Ms. Mbewe-Anamela has since urged Mr. Chitambala and other public figures to promote respectful, issue-based discourse instead of disparaging women.
She also called on the public to reject gender-based scrutiny and support constructive dialogue, especially as the country approaches a critical electoral period.
