Over 470kg of Elephant Ivory Seized in Lusaka Anti-Trafficking Operation

By Staff Reporter,

The Ministry of Tourism has announced a major breakthrough in the fight against wildlife crime following the seizure of over 470 kilogrammes of elephant ivory in Lusaka.

The operation, conducted by officers from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), led to the interception of 95 pieces of elephant ivory weighing approximately 471.8 kilogrammes.

Ministry Principal Public Relations Officer, Nelly Banda disclosed in a statement that the intelligence-led operation was carried out on March 9, 2026, in the Lilayi area after a tip-off from members of the public. Two suspects were initially apprehended in possession of the ivory, with further investigations leading to the arrest of additional individuals linked to the illegal consignment.

Ms. Banda revealed further that a total of eight suspects were detained, with six formally identified and jointly charged for unlawful possession of a prescribed trophy, contrary to the Wildlife Act No. 14 of 2015. The suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear in court.

She explained that preliminary investigations indicate that the ivory was sourced from various parts of the country, including Shangombo in Western Province and areas in Eastern Province. Authorities have also uncovered indications of an organized wildlife crime syndicate with both local and international links, including a foreign national believed to be a buyer.

She added that some of the suspects are repeat offenders previously convicted of wildlife-related crimes. Mobile phones recovered during the operation have since been submitted for forensic analysis to support ongoing investigations.

Ms. Banda further reiterated government’s commitment to combating illegal wildlife trade, noting that such activities threaten biodiversity and undermine the tourism sector. Authorities have pledged to strengthen enforcement measures, enhance collaboration, and review existing laws to ensure stricter penalties.

She commended members of the public for their role in providing information that led to the successful operation and has urged continued vigilance in reporting wildlife crimes.
