Leader of the Green Party, Peter Sinkamba, has dismissed Zambia’s ranking as the third most favourable destination for mining investment in Africa and 25th globally, describing it as “mere semantics” that does not reflect the situation on the ground.
Speaking to Mafken News, Mr. Sinkamba said Zambia has made little progress in mineral output, particularly copper, with production averaging between 800,000 and 900,000 metric tonnes in recent years.
He contrasted this with the growth recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which he said has increased copper production from about 250,000 metric tonnes two decades ago to nearly 5 million tonnes today.
Mr. Sinkamba stated that if Zambia were truly attracting the level of investment suggested by the Fraser Institute 2025 Annual Survey, the country’s copper production figures would show a significant increase.
The survey ranked Zambia behind Botswana and Morocco as some of Africa’s top mining investment destinations.
