A tragic fire incident has claimed the life of a four-month-old baby in the Kanenga farming area of Chililabombwe, in Copperbelt Province.

Confirming the incident to Mafken News, Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer Mwala Yuyi said the fire occurred on February 25, 2026, around 16:40 hours, at the home of Moses Musanji, a general worker at Bodwin’s Farm.

Mr. Yuyi explained that the thatched house was completely burnt, trapping the infant, Promise Musanji, who died in the inferno.

He said Mr. Musanji had left for work, leaving his wife and three children at home. His wife later went to fetch water from a borehole, leaving the baby asleep inside the house while the two other children were playing outside. On her return, she found the house engulfed in flames, and the baby had already been burnt to death.

Mr. Yuyi further disclosed that a packet of matches was found about four metres from the burnt house.

Police have since opened an inquiry file to investigate the incident. The body of the deceased has been deposited at Kakoso Level One Hospital Mortuary, awaiting postmortem and burial arrangements.

The value of the property destroyed by the fire is yet to be established.
