The Mineworkers Union of Zambia has distanced itself from remarks by mining activist and former Branch Chairman Geoffrey Luchele regarding the 2026 General Elections.
Mr. Luchele had stated that miners would not endorse any political candidate, citing unfulfilled promises by successive governments.
In a statement to Mafken News, MUZ Coordinator and Public Relations Officer Michael Kaluba said Mr. Luchele has no authority to speak on behalf of the union.
He described the claims as misleading and urged Mr. Luchele to refrain from associating the union with his personal views. Mr. Kaluba said the union reserves the right to issue its own official positions.
Meanwhile, Mr. Luchele maintained that miners are organizing and drafting a social contract to present to President Hakainde Hichilema and opposition leaders, outlining demands for improved job security, stronger legal protections and fair benefits for mining communities.
