Economist Munyumba Mutwale has suggested that recent improvements in power supply, the strengthening of the kwacha, and reduced prices of some commodities could be politically timed as Zambia approaches the 2026 General Elections.
Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, Mr. Mutwale said governments are often influenced by political interests, noting that re-election remains a key motivation for those in power. He explained that leaders typically seek to improve public perception ahead of elections through visible economic and social interventions.
However, he acknowledged that some of the developments may genuinely favour the government. He cited improved electricity generation despite low water levels, referencing latest figures from the Zambezi River Authority, which indicate usable water levels at 12 percent, up from 6 percent last year.
Mr. Mutwale further pointed to strong performance in the mining sector, particularly in the fourth quarter of 2025, which recorded about 750 million US dollars. He said increased mining tax revenue and support from bondholders are among the key factors contributing to exchange rate stability and improved economic outlook.
