The Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) has welcomed the government’s decision to suspend livestock imports from South Africa following a Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak.
CTPD Researcher Mukuka Chilalika said the move will help protect Zambia’s livestock subsector and safeguard the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.
Mr. Chilalika noted that Foot and Mouth Disease poses serious risks, particularly at a time when climate variability and cash flow constraints are already affecting rural incomes.
He has since called for sustained investment in disease surveillance and early warning systems, emphasizing the need for predictable financing and stronger institutional coordination.
Mr. Chilalika further stated that the temporary import suspension presents an opportunity for Zambia to strengthen domestic livestock production and reduce reliance on imports.
