Government Moves to Strengthen Food Security After Bumper Harvest

By Anthony Chomba,

Agriculture Minister Rueben Mtolo

The Government says it is determined to strengthen food security and build a resilient food production system following last season’s historic bumper harvest.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Forty-Ninth Session of IFAD’s Governing Council, Agriculture Minister Rueben Mtolo cited key initiatives including climate-smart agriculture and the full migration of the Farmer Input Support Programme to the e-voucher system.

He also highlighted three Agricultural Bills before the National Assembly covering food reserves, agricultural credit, and marketing aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and improving farmers’ access to finance.

Minister Mtolo stressed the need for greater collaboration with cooperating partners and the private sector to expand maize storage capacity which he described as critical to Zambia’s food security strategy.

He added that under President Hakainde Hichilema, Government remains committed to boosting production for both domestic consumption and export.
