Reports have emerged of a suspected armed robbery at Shinde Stadium in Mufulira, where unknown gunmen allegedly made off with gate takings.

The incident is reported to have involved gunfire, although full details remain unclear.

Mighty Mufulira Wanderers Football Club President George Katongo has confirmed the development.

In an interview, Mr. Katongo said the club is still gathering information surrounding the incident and will issue a comprehensive statement once facts have been established.

According to a statement made available to Mafken News, the President of Mufulira Wanderers Football Club, Mr. George Katongo, strongly condemned the armed robbery incident that occurred on Sunday, 16 February 2026, following the club’s Week 20 fixture against Nchanga Rangers Football Club at Shinde Stadium.

Speaking on the matter, Mr. Katongo said armed criminals stormed the club secretariat around 18:00 hours, where they held members of staff at gunpoint and stole K181,000 realised from gate takings.

“The criminals hijacked a Toyota Harrier, registration number AIF 4314, belonging to our Logistics Manager, Mr. Patrick Mwanza. The vehicle was intended to transport the day’s gate collections to Mopani Security for safekeeping,” Mr. Katongo said. “The assailants fired gunshots to scare away members of the public before fleeing the scene.”

He confirmed that the Zambia Police Service was immediately alerted and launched a manhunt. The stolen vehicle was later recovered after being abandoned, though the suspects escaped with the cash.

“We deeply regret this unfortunate incident. The safety of our staff, supporters and stakeholders remains our top priority. We are cooperating fully with the Zambia Police Service to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice,” Mr. Katongo said.

The Club President further assured sponsors and supporters that measures are being taken to strengthen security arrangements to prevent similar incidents in future.
