Mopani Copper Mines’ Mufulira site has been suspended by the Minerals Regulation Commission (MRC) following recent accidents.
The commission says the mine failed to comply with regulations requiring a system to account for underground workers.
According to a statement by Ministry Principal Public Relations Officer Kalani Muchima, the suspension follows a high-level meeting between MRC and Mopani management, which reviewed accidents and safety controls.
Mr. Muchima said MRC will conduct a comprehensive audit of Mopani’s Mufulira and Nkana sites to ensure safety compliance.
He stressed that operations will remain suspended until safety issues are addressed.
Mr. Muchima further stated that MRC is prioritizing safety in Zambia’s mining industry, with the motto “Safe Worker, Safe Tonnage, Safe Environment and, ultimately, a Safe Kwacha”.
