President Hichilema Urges Africa To Set Its Own Economic Agenda

By Anthony Chomba,

President Hakainde Hichilema

President Hakainde Hichilema says Africa should change the narrative that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should construct programs for them.

Speaking at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa, president Hichilema said African countries should create their own programs with support from the IMF.

Hichilema said Zambia has done this by tailoring programs to support growth in the mining sector, including value addition.

He stressed that African countries must take the lead and dictate their own agendas to achieve sustainable economic growth.

And Hichilema said mining reforms are yielding tangible results. He stated that the reforms have enabled the recapitalization of struggling mines and opened new projects.

He cited Konkola Copper Mines and Mopani Copper Mines as key to Zambia’s target of producing 3 million tonnes of copper by 2031.
