Mopani Copper Mines Suspends Reliant Mining Operations

By Rogan Labika

Management at Mopani Copper Mines has suspended all underground operations conducted by Reliant Mining Company at both its Kitwe and Mufulira sites.

The suspension follows two fatal underground mining accidents occurring in less than three weeks. The most recent incident took place on January 31, 2026.

In a statement released to Mafken News, Mopani Copper Mines Public Relations Manager Nebert Mulenga confirmed that the suspension will remain in force pending the completion of full investigations into both accidents.

Mr. Mulenga stated that the reinstatement of Reliant Mining’s operations will only be considered once Mopani is satisfied with the company’s remedial plans and has verified their readiness to implement the required safety improvements.
