The Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has expressed regret over two fatal mine accidents recorded between January 31 and February 1, 2026, at Mopani Copper Mines in Mufulira and Lubambe Copper Mines in Chililabombwe.
At Mopani’s Mufulira Plant, a 28-year-old contractor employee, Christopher Katongo of Reliant Mining Company, died after sustaining injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at Malcolm Watson Mine Hospital.
MUZ President Joseph Chewe says the incident is the second mine accident recorded in 2026 and the third fatality involving Reliant Mining under Mopani Copper Mines this year.
Mr. Chewe also lamented another fatal accident at Lubambe Mine, where a 55-year-old miner, Lazarous Chimba, collapsed underground and died upon arrival at hospital.
He says the recurring fatalities point to serious safety and operational gaps, particularly among contractors, and has called for urgent measures to ensure safer working conditions for miners.
In a statement issued to Mafken News by MUZ Coordinator and Public Relations Officer Michael Kaluba, the union has since conveyed its condolences to the bereaved families and pledged its full support.
