The National President for the local Catholic Clergy in Zambia, Reverend Father Augustine Mwewa, has called on the government to put in place strong laws and policies aimed at safeguarding the upbringing and welfare of children.

Fr. Mwewa, who serves at Lulamba Catholic Church in Chingola, said the appeal is in response to the growing number of street children in Chingola’s central business district.

Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, he stressed that efforts to remove children from the streets should not be the responsibility of government alone, but must involve the church, parents, and the wider community.

He further emphasized the need for economic empowerment of families to address the root causes of the problem, and recommended the introduction of counselling and rehabilitation programmes to help reintegrate children living on the streets back into society.

Fr. Mwewa noted that a coordinated and compassionate approach is essential to securing a safer and more dignified future for vulnerable children.
