Government to Revamp NAIS Centre to Boost Cattle Population and Beef Exports

By Morgan Chomba,

Minister of Fisheries and Livestock – Peter Kapala

Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Peter Kapala says the government will this year revamp the National Artificial Insemination Services (NAIS) Centre and other key facilities in a bid to meet the Presidential directive of increasing the national cattle population to 7.4 million by 2027.

Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, Mr. Kapala said the move is aimed at strengthening the country’s breeding capacity and improving the quality of the national herd as part of broader efforts to transform the livestock sector and enhance productivity.

The Minister noted that the initiative is also critical to the government’s ambition of achieving up to US$1 billion in annual beef exports, which he said will significantly contribute to economic growth, job creation, and improved livelihoods for farmers across the livestock value chain.

Mr. Kapala emphasized that revamping the NAIS Centre will play a key role in modernizing livestock production and positioning Zambia as a competitive player in regional and international beef markets.
