Medical Expert Urges Recycling Solution as Waste Piles Up in Mufulira Townships

A prominent local figure and medical professional, Dr. Mukwenya Ng’andu, has called for the urgent establishment of a formal recycling industry in Mufulira District to address the growing problem of uncollected waste in residential areas.
Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, Dr. Ng’andu expressed concern over the piling garbage in several townships, particularly Kantanshi, warning that the situation poses a serious public health risk.
He said continued reliance on traditional waste collection methods is no longer sustainable for the local authority, as challenges related to logistics and waste disposal persist.
Dr. Ng’andu noted that the establishment of a recycling plant would provide a strategic partnership to the Mufulira Municipal Council by significantly reducing the volume of waste on the streets.
He added that a functioning recycling industry would divert a large proportion of waste into a productive value chain, easing pressure on disposal sites while promoting environmental sustainability and public health in the district.
