Mufulira Health Director Urges Women to Go for Cervical Cancer Screening

By Kalonje Mumba,

Mufulira District Health Director, Dr Abel Hamoonga

Mufulira District Health Director, Dr Abel Hamoonga, has urged women to consistently undergo cervical cancer screening.

Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, Dr Hamoonga said that in line with Cervical Cancer Awareness Month commemorated in January, the district has intensified sensitisation campaigns to ensure women are well informed about the disease.

He noted that many women remain sceptical about screening services.

Dr Hamoonga emphasized that early screening is critical, explaining that cervical cancer is easier to prevent and manage when detected early, unlike in advanced stages such as stage four.

He further disclosed that the district has also stepped up efforts to administer the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to children below the age of 15.

Dr Hamoonga appealed to parents and guardians to consent to the vaccination of their children, stating that the HPV vaccine plays a key role in the prevention of cervical cancer.
