By Kalonje Mumba

Minister of Transport and Logistics, Frank Tayali, has described the alleged attacks and abductions of Zambian truck drivers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as extremely serious.

Minister of Transport and Logistics – Frank Tayali

Speaking in an interview, Mr Tayali explained that rushing into quick interventions such as diverting trucks to alternative routes that bypass the DRC would not be effective, as such measures could disrupt trade between the two countries.

He noted that Zambia and the DRC share strong trade ties, adding that any disruption would negatively affect both countries, with the DRC likely to feel the impact more due to its limited logistical capacity.

Mr Tayali further said proposals to establish a dry port where Zambian traders could deposit goods for collection by DRC-based logistics companies have been noted but stated that the DRC currently lacks the level of logistical sophistication required to effectively implement such an arrangement.

The minister also warned those behind the alleged attacks to desist, stressing that continued acts of violence could severely disrupt cross-border trade adding that Zambian truck drivers do not deserve to be subjected to such inhumane and unscrupulous treatment.
