Police in Mufulira have shot and injured a suspect who allegedly attempted to flee after being found in possession of a stolen firearm.

Copperbelt Commanding Officer Mwala Yuyi confirmed to Mafken News that the incident occurred on the night of March 3, 2026, when officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) under Mufulira Central Police Station tracked down the suspect, identified as Leonard Kafuko, to his residence in Malela Market.

Mr. Yuyi said police had been investigating the theft of a shotgun reported on March 1, 2026, by a security guard, David Kunda, of Metropolitan Security Company, following an incident at Trimurti Wholesale Shop.

He explained that the suspect was identified through CCTV footage by a worker at Trimurti Wholesale Shop, prompting officers to move in and apprehend him.

Upon searching the house, officers reportedly discovered the stolen shotgun hidden under the suspect’s bed. However, when confronted, the suspect allegedly attempted to escape. Police fired warning shots, but after he failed to comply, he was shot in the leg.

The suspect is currently receiving treatment at Ronald Ross Hospital and is said to be in stable condition.

The recovered firearm has been secured as an exhibit, and investigations are ongoing.
