The Government of the Republic of Zambia has reiterated that it will not under any circumstances allow illegal mining to persist within the country.
Speaking at a press briefing to update the nation on the mining sector’s performance, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Paul Kabuswe emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring all mining operations are legalized and formalized.
He noted that these measures are essential to ensure the sector’s growth directly benefits the Zambian people.
The Minister confirmed that the Zambia Army, under the leadership of the Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele will continue its operations to remove illegal miners from sites across the country. Stating that the initiative aims to create a safe, regulated environment for trained and formalized small-scale and artisanal miners.
Mr. Kabuswe revealed that 1,663 Artisanal mining rights have already been issued and 673 Cooperatives have undergone specialized training in safe mining practices.
The Minister also announced the robust upward trend in mineral output for the fiscal year ending 2025, with Copper Production increasing by 8 percent and Gold by 12 percent.
