
The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Choma District has destroyed over 189 kilograms of cannabis that was seized from 228 suspects across several districts in Southern Province.
The destroyed drugs were confiscated from suspects in Choma, Kalomo, Pemba, Sinazongwe, Namwala, and Itezhi-Tezhi districts. The exercise followed the conclusion and disposal of related cases by competent courts between January 2024 and December 2025.
The consignment comprised fresh and dried cannabis plants as well as cannabis seeds. The destruction was conducted in accordance with Section 62 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No. 35 of 2021, read together with Section 355(i) of the Criminal Procedure Code, Cap 88 of the Laws of the Republic of Zambia.
Speaking during the exercise, the Southern Province DEC Regional Commander reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and substance abuse. She urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities, noting that drugs pose a serious threat to young people and undermine national development.
The drug destruction exercise was witnessed by various stakeholders, including members of the media, the District Joint Operations Committee (DJOC), public health specialists, judicial officers, representatives from the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), and DEC officers.
