The opposition United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) has proposed sweeping reforms in how civil servants access loans, warning that many are trapped in costly debt.
Speaking to Mafken News, UPPZ President Charles Chanda said private lenders aggressively target government workers because they are viewed as low-risk defaulters due to stable salaries.
But Mr. Chanda argued that the high interest rates attached to these loans are crippling civil servants and leaving many struggling to make ends meet.
He says once elected after the August general elections, UPPZ will introduce a government-backed Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) aimed at restructuring and freeing civil servants from overwhelming debt.
