The Occupational Health and Safety Institute (OHSI) has announced its readiness to implement the Occupational Health and Safety Act, which prioritizes citizens’ health and safety, making Zambia an attractive business destination.
OHSI Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Martha Chakulimba, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to drive the agenda forward during a visit by the Parliamentary Committee on National Economy, Trade and Labour Matters to the Kitwe District OHSI offices on the Copperbelt.
Dr. Chakulimba highlighted the importance of investing in occupational health and safety, citing staggering global statistics.
She stated that, about to 2.3 million workers die annually from work-related accidents and diseases, costing the global economy an estimated $2.8 trillion.
She adds that, the OHSI in Kitwe has seen impressive numbers, with 200-300 daily attendances, demonstrating the impact of its services.
Committee Chairperson Siboeso Sefulo emphasized that the Act’s effective implementation is crucial, and the committee is focused on ensuring it makes a tangible impact on the ground by identifying and addressing legal gaps.
Ms. Sefulo acknowledged that challenges may arise during implementation, and the committee is prepared to address them.
Meanwhile, Committee member Taulo Chewe stressed that evaluation and monitoring of the legislation will be crucial to ensure the law is fully implemented without compromising the operations of the institute.
