NUMAW President – Saul Simujila

The National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) has welcomed the 616 percent increase in cobalt production, describing it as a significant gain for the mining sector and the national economy.

Cobalt is currently trading on the London Metal Exchange (LME) at approximately US$56,290 per tonne as of January 27, 2026.

Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, NUMAW President Saul Simujila said while the growth in cobalt production is encouraging, there is need to accelerate progress through effective resource management, improved infrastructure development, and increased investment in the mining sector.

Mr. Simujila emphasized the importance of comprehensive geological surveys and accurate data mapping to identify mineral deposits and secure areas with known resources.

He noted that such measures would help boost production, create employment opportunities, and stimulate local economies.

He further called for mineral diversification, highlighting positive growth trends in coal, zinc, gold, and copper production, which he said should be strategically developed to ensure the country fully benefits from its vast mineral endowment.
