The Non-Governmental Organization’s Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has expressed concern over the continued imbalance in gender representation in both the formal and informal sectors, despite progress in some areas.
Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, NGOCC Executive Director Anne Mbewe said sectors such as mining and driving remain largely male-dominated, stressing the need for deliberate interventions to promote equal participation.
However, Ms. Mbewe acknowledged positive strides in the public service, citing increased appointments of women to key positions, including at the National Assembly of Zambia.
She also highlighted NGOCC’s work in addressing social challenges such as early child marriage, noting that while the organisation focuses on women and girls, it promotes justice for all victims without discrimination.
Ms. Mbewe added that NGOCC is working with like-minded partners, including its affiliate member, the National Men’s Network, to advocate for fair policies and amplify voices that protect the rights of women, boys, and girls across communities.
