Mufulira District Commissioner – Everisto Chilumba

Mufulira District Commissioner Everisto Chilumba has called on men to take a more active role in cancer prevention efforts, particularly by embracing regular screening.

Mr. Chilumba made the remarks during the World Cancer Commemoration Day held at Malela Market this afternoon under the theme “United but Unique.” He encouraged men to take responsibility for their health by undergoing screening for prostate cancer, which primarily affects men.

Meanwhile, Mufulira District Health Director Abel Hamoonga said cancer remains a growing public health concern in the district, presenting both achievements and challenges in prevention and early detection.

Dr. Hamoonga revealed that between 2023 and 2025, breast cancer screening recorded significant uptake, with more than 17,000 women screened at its peak.

He added that cervical cancer screening increased to about 7,600 cases, although a slight decline was noted in 2025. Prostate cancer screening also showed improvement, with approximately 4,000 men screened during the same period.

He emphasized the importance of sustained community sensitization and increased participation in screening programs to reduce cancer-related morbidity and mortality in the district.
