MedRAP Calls for Strategic Leadership at Health Ministry Following Minister’s Removal
By Staff Reporter,

The Medicines Research and Access Platform, MedRAP, has called for strong and strategic leadership at the Ministry of Health following the recent removal of Health Minister Elijah Muchima.
MedRAP Executive Director Liyoka Liyoka says the development presents an opportunity to strengthen direction within Zambia’s health sector.
Mr. Liyoka notes that the country continues to face a triple burden of disease, including communicable diseases such as malaria, HIV and tuberculosis, rising cases of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension, as well as neglected tropical diseases.
He has urged Government to prioritize prevention, primary healthcare, and improved maternal and child health services.
Mr. Liyoka has also raised concern over governance challenges, including reported drug expiries and systemic inefficiencies, stressing the need for stronger oversight and accountability.
With the National Health Strategic Plan for 2021 to 2026 set to expire this year, MedRAP says the appointment of a technically competent and visionary Health Minister is critical to driving reforms in the sector.
