Kwacha Gains Yet to Ease Cost of Living

By Anthony Chomba/Fridah Chalwe

Some Lusaka residents say the recent appreciation of the kwacha has not translated into meaningful economic relief, as the cost of living remains high.

This comes after Commerce Minister Chipoka Mulenga urged traders to reduce prices in line with the stronger local currency. However, residents argue that the benefits have yet to trickle down.

One resident, Obby Mutale, says economic conditions remain tough, with families seeing no noticeable change despite the kwacha’s gains.

Another resident, Mercy Tembo, says the gap between the rich and the poor remains wide, adding that only wealthy individuals appear to be benefiting from the currency appreciation.

Meanwhile, Kulimatower Bus Station Chairman Nicholas Banda says the stronger kwacha has not led to reduced prices for goods and services, including fuel. He notes that persistently high fuel costs have made it impossible for bus operators to lower fares.

Mr. Banda has appealed to the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to consider cutting fuel prices so that consumers can benefit from the kwacha’s appreciation.

He adds that essential commodities such as cooking oil remain expensive, placing a heavy burden on many Zambians—especially those who rely on public transport—as passengers continue to pay high fares despite the stronger currency.
